How to choose the correct oil filter wrench?

How to choose the correct oil filter wrench?

An oil-filter wrench is a handy tool for removing spin-on type oil filters. These filters are difficult to grip, especially when they are oily. Chain-type, strap-type, cup/socket-type, and claw-type oil-filter wrench are the most common oil filter wrenches in the market; we are here today to show you how to choose a correct size cup/socket -type oil filter wrench for your car/motorcycle.

A cup/socket-type oil filter wrench is usually metal steel or plastic cup that is shaped like a socket. The cup is placed on the end of the filter, which engages the knurling/ flutes. A socket or wrench is then used to loosen the filter.
There are many different aftermarket oil filters; it is sometimes confusing to choose the correct cup wrench that works properly. When shopping online, we'd suggest NOT to just search for your car/motorcycle model and year. If that's what you do, there's a very high chance that it might end up in the bin. A better way to do is to check the specifications of your oil filter and search for the matching size.

Why is that?

Let's take a look at an example here; here are 3 different oil filters in 3 different shapes, from 3 different manufactures, and they are all for FORD Fusion.

So how do we search for an oil filter cup wrench that's right for my oil filter?
oil filter, flutes, oil filter cap wrench, oil filter cap
Count - how many flutes on the oil filter cap

Step 1.
You need to count how many flutes there are on your current oil filter cap.

Measure - outer diameter length of oil filter cap

Step 2.
Measure the oil filter from edge to edge

We can see from the photo above, for this oil filter, there are total 14 flutes and the outer diameter is 64.94mm. We will need to look for an oil filter cap wrench for the same numbers of flutes and with slightly bigger cap inner diameter. So from following wrenches here, the 65mm x 14 flutes one (C) would work best for this Ford Fusion oil filter here.

A. 93mm is too big, 36 flutes is too many. -> not fit

B. 14 flutes is good but 76mm is too big, -> not fit

C. 14 flutes is good and 65mm is just right! -
> perfect fit!

  2. I have 6-8 oil filter wrenches, similar to mt motorbike above. Which wrench is exceptional depends on no longer handiest on the oil filter out shape itself, however plenty at the orientation of the oil filter within the engine compartment, and the precise clearance problems. There's no nice ordinary oil clear out a wrench. I use a unique one for my truck than my Corolla, and I used a special one than those for my earlier automobile, a VW Rabbit.

I suppose you'll have fewer clearance problems with the band-type that loops over the filter out, in preference to the cap-type. Still, occasionally the addressed design on the band-sorts can motive clearance problems, so you have to test which cope with fashion works splendid for your automobile. I actually have a sequence type, wherein a length of bicycle-type chain wraps throughout the filter, with a quick take care of that works nicely in tight situations.

If all else fails, you could commonly eliminate an oil filter through poking a screwdriver smooth via it. And twisting it out with the screwdriver. But that creates a bit of a large number.
